I've enjoyed many an interesting dinners and long walks with my good friend Dr. Murray Waldman over the years. He is a learned and thoughtful man who has been writing books and articles for most of his life. He's been a leader in his profession and has never shied away from controversy or the truth.
Quebec's proposed Charter of Values is simply too disturbing to ignore so Murray sent me a few words that he wrote recently on this subject. He graciously allowed me to share. Writes Dr. Waldman....
Yet Another Clarity Act is Needed
The Quebec government has proposed a new piece of legislation called the Quebec Charter of Values. Like previous suggested legislation that have been proposed by this party there is a large area of ambiguity. This brief article will explain what is permitted to be worn and what is not.
The following are forbidden, keepas, hijabs, and turbans. The following are permitted, toques, fedoras, sombreros and cowboy hats. It is of course forbidden to wear a keepa or hijab underneath your toque or sombrero.
If you are a woman and have lost your hair due to chemotherapy you may wear a headscarf, providing of course you are not a Muslim, in which case you can wear a toque or a sombrero.
The same holds true for hats and keppas if you are a man and perhaps because you are balding you may wear a hat at work provided you are not a devout Jew. In that case it is forbidden,
As for items of jewelry large crosses are forbidden. Other shapes such as triangles, (equilateral, isosceles and scalene are all permitted), squares, rhomboids, hexagons and most abstract shapes are permitted.
You may wear a full moon a half moon or a quarter moon but a crescent moon is forbidden.
You may wear a three, four or five pointed star but a six-pointed star is forbidden.
As for clothing; a monks robe or nuns habit is not allowed, but a judo outfit is.
Hair may be worn any length including dreadlocks, provided you are not a Rastafarian in which case they are not allowed. You many shave your head if and only if you are not a Buddhist Monk.
As you can see by simple adherence to these minimal rules we in Quebec can have a happy unified and sartorially splendid society.
