As the end of each year approaches, we're all frantically trying to commit to a new future, one that will make us happier, skinnier, healthier or whatever. We do this by making New Years' Resolutions. Give it up. You're just setting yourself up for failure and disappointment. I don't have the stats in front of me but I'm quite certain the vast majority of us will not achieve our goal. In fact, according to the health clubs, we give up these pipe dreams very early in the new year.
I have a better idea that will make some, if not more of us feel much better. Let's compare where we are today in relation to where we were one year ago. At the very least, we're one year wiser. Knowing what you know now, would you ever want to go back one year and relive those life lessons all over again? Not likely.
Chances are, we've progressed somewhat in some category. Maybe you committed to drinking "lite beer" rather than the regular stuff. Even if you drink the same amount, you should pat yourself on the back for at least making that change. Good on you.
Maybe you're even walking up the stairs to the bus from the subway platform twice a week rather than every day... even that is progress and good on you.
This is the easy way to feel a sense of accomplishment without having to put too much of a strain on your ego.
