I wish nothing but bad things on those who run the NHL. The sooner the league implodes, the better. They sell bad hockey and charge too much for the privilege of watching it. I no longer watch it.
I do however remained glued to the TV when they replay old games. Last week it as a game featuring the rookies (both 19 years old) Wayne Whatshisname and Mark Messier. Wayne racked up 327 assists or some such crazy number. What a display of skill and finesse!
Last night was the New Year's Eve game between the Habs and the Red Army. It is easily the best game of hockey ever and I will watch it again and again. Thanks to Tretiak the Soviet goalie, the game ended in a 3-3 tie. He was much better than Dryden that night.
But the real star was Danny Gallivan. His style was the benchmark by which all of the other illiterates will be judged.
Only Danny could describe a "dire dearth of whistles here in the 2nd period". Or how about Peter Mahovalich trying to "negotiate the blue line". Or Yvon Cornoyer's "dedication of speed". Yes, according to Danny, this was an "indefatible game". Oh, one more thing. The game had "forechecking of tremendous magnitude".
Such a joy to be witness to such entertainment both on and off the ice.
