We played two games today. The 10:00 AM game was a challenge in light of the previous day's activities. It felt like I just got home and had to leave for the arena again.
At 12:37 AM today, I performed my first (and only) stand-up comedy routine. As our contribution to the tournament entertainment, the Jokers individually performed one minute of stand-up comedy. I revisited my role as Banjo Dunc and I have to say that I have virtually no idea what I said. All I really remember is that I said something about not just being a great hockey player but a lover of the highest order. Keep in mind I was performing with "Billy Bob" teeth (think Deliverence, see photo). At that point of the show, someone threw a black brassiere on the stage and that may have contributed to my memory loss.
I couldn't help but be impressed by the courage and creativity that went into this. Many of us had never done anything like this, including Tom Connors Jr and "dandy" Charlie Risor but we just "did it". The other teams hide behind guitars and loud amps and feed off of each other's courage. Not the Jokers! They threw caution to the wind and swallowed what little pride they thought they had and put it on the line.
In any event, we won the 10:00 AM game which qualified us for the Championship game at 4:00 PM this afternoon. We played the other semi final winner, the Peterborough Pneumonia. What a thrilling match it was. It was a back and forth, hard fought affair but again, for the second consecutive year, we won. The final score was 4-3 with funny man/teacher Mike Takacs (see photo, left) scoring the winning goal with mere minutes remaining.
The celebration went on for hours. There was much hugging and more hugging and even more hugging (got a bit uncomfortable after an hour or so of this) and beer drinking and silly jokes as the photos suggest. The parade apparently will be in August. The route will be published soon. We're negotiating with CBC sports for broadcasting rights.
Everyone was a star! The big guns came to play: Steve (what are you wearing tonight Ted) Levine, Jay (I promise not to forget you guys when I'm a big star) Malone, Mike (OK class, SHUT UP) Takacs, Ag (look where I put my finger) Cavan, Peter (I promise not to pinch) Windrem, Tom (pass the Jamieson's) Connors and everyone else I don't have time to honour.
