If you have hippy tendancies and still harbour the fantasy of returning to the land to forge a new and different kind of rural life... think again. Unless you're planning on a move to the far reaches of Northern Ontario, the hobby farm market may be leaving you behind. Read this recent blurb on the escalation of demand for land like this and the subsequent increase in values.
It is expected to correct itself over time but I'm afraid the horse is out of the barn..... It's too late! While God won't be making any more real estate any time soon, the amount of tillable land will continue to decrease indefinitely. This is due to urban sprawl and the environmental decimation of good land due to drought and flooding and all that bad stuff.
Soon Canadian farmers will be clear cutting our maple forests and someday, the country side will begin to resemble Great Britain. How's that for a bleak forcast?
The good news is, at least for my generation, we won't be around to see it.
