When I first heard about this group I wanted to help. I live right next door to St. Jamestown, a huge complex of high rises apartments in downtown Toronto (in fact I'm looking at it from my living room as I write this). I know first hand how tough life is here, partiularly for kids from very poor families.
Reaching Out Through Music offers these kids a chance to learn to play an instrument and sing with others and as with most groups like this, it is all volunteer with limited budget. With the hard work of one of their board members, Gina Dineen and others, it was a huge success. The members of my band donated their time and services and I can't thank them enough.... they are easily the most generous group of professional musicians I know. My friend, professional photographer Mun Chau set up shop and took hundreds of photos with the proceeds going to this very worthy cause. Her presence added greatly to the evening.
The real stars of the show were local square dance caller, Al Calhoun and his wife of 58 years, Renia. Al has been a caller for most of his 85 years. They have square danced their way around the world and are a treasure valued by those who've had the good fortune to meet them.
